Porting and polishing your vehicle’s cylinder head is an effective way to increase high-RPM air flow into your engine.OUR ONLINE CHECKOUT is CLOSED and we are NOT accepting any NEW orders at this time. When your engine can take in more air, it can also burn more fuel.īurning more fuel means producing more power. Porting and polishing a head provides this effect for the air/fuel mixture at higher RPMs. The cost for the procedure can vary widely from as little as $200 to more than $2000 dollars. A Stage III port and polish, however, is generally the best value and provides the most performance for your money. This type of port and polish costs about $500, depending on the type of vehicle you have. If you get a port and polish, you can expect a performance increase of somewhere between 25 and 75 horsepower. Pricing is all over the place for engine porting. Generally, you have to get a quote based on your engine. There is, however, a community of shops that maintain somewhat standard pricing for traditional V-8 cylinder head pairs. Stage I: This most basic form of porting and polishing generally costs about $150. This is just the minimum recommended porting stage and includes a bowl port and port match. Stage II: This is generally around $300 and is coequally known as a ‘street’ or ‘strip’ port job for drivers on a budget. This port and polish stage includes bowls and intake opening port match. Stage III: A stage III port is really the minimum ‘full port and polishes’ you can get. It costs about $550 and, due to the law of diminishing returns, also ends up being the best value port and polish to get. This procedure blends all of the castings in the head for drastically improved air flow. A Stage III port will generally include porting of the bowls, a port match, and complete profiling of the combustion chambers. Stage IV: Most hot rod drivers opt for this higher stage of port and polish. This stage is almost essential for those running nitrous or high-pressure turbochargers, or superchargers. This stage includes all of the above plus a fully ported exhaust, bowl ported and port matched intake and more precise profiling of the combustion chambers. A Stage IV port and polish will run you somewhere around $750.

Tonya continues to use her 27-inch iMac to this day (and a 2019 model in her office at Cornell), and Josh used his until it became unbearably flaky in 2019, after which he sent it to me and replaced it with a 2019 model. Similarly, when my parents wanted to upgrade from an older iMac, they looked at my 27-inch iMac and bought one too. By mid-2015, Tonya had replaced her 2011 27-inch iMac (also paired with a 27-inch Thunderbolt Display) with an identical 2014 27-inch iMac, and when Josh Centers needed a new Mac, TidBITS bought him a 2014 27-inch iMac as well. In August 2020, I bought a 2020 27-inch iMac with a 3.8 GHz eight-core Intel Core i7, 8 GB of RAM (again upgraded to 40 GB via OWC), and 1 TB of storage, for just under $3000. Then its internal SSD died, forcing me to boot with an external SSD and deal with increased flakiness (see “ Six Lessons Learned from Dealing with an iMac’s Dead SSD,” 27 April 2020), so I was happy to replace it once Apple released what would turn out to be the final update. With tax, the package came to $4550, but that combination served me well (with a bump to 40 GB of RAM at some point) until early 2020. I ordered one immediately, spending $3150 for a 4.0 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD, plus another $900 for a 27-inch Thunderbolt Display. I’ve been a huge fan and promoter of the 27-inch iMac since it appeared in late 2014-I still remember visiting an Apple Store in Santa Monica with Michael Cohen and Tonya while en route to the MacTech Conference so I could see that screen in person. But if Apple has no plans to update it with Apple silicon, we have to move on. Plus, when you expand your thinking beyond a single purchase, the 27-inch iMac isn’t nearly as compelling.ĭon’t assume I’m here to speak ill of the 27-inch iMac. When the new options’ prices are higher, the associated performance and capabilities are also greater-a classic Apple technique for encouraging users to pay more. Pricing out comparable systems revealed that while the 27-inch iMac was in a sweet spot where price meets performance, other combinations of Apple gear come close. If you have to decide based on the Macs you can buy today, there are numerous good options. However, sources tell 9to5Mac that Apple currently has no plans to release a large-screen iMac. That immediately raised the question: If you have been waiting to purchase an Apple silicon 27-inch iMac, what are your options in a world that doesn’t include it? Some hold out hope that Apple will bring back a high-end all-in-one desktop Mac, perhaps with a 30- or 32-inch screen. If the Mac Pro is all that’s left, there’s no room for the 27-inch iMac. And they join the rest of our incredible Mac lineup with Apple silicon, making our transition nearly complete, with just one more product to go: Mac Pro. Together with the Studio Display, these products will empower users to create the studios of their dreams and to continue to change the world. We introduced Mac Studio, which was designed to put all this groundbreaking performance right on your desk. At the close of Apple’s Peek Performance presentation, John Ternus summed up with: Which Mac Will Replace the 27-iMac for You?Īpple’s release of the Mac Studio-the company’s first completely new Mac line since the MacBook Air debuted in 2008-and Studio Display also seems to have triggered the end of what was likely the company’s most popular desktop Mac: the 27-inch iMac with 5K Retina display (see “ New Mac Studio and Studio Display Change Mac Buying Calculus,” 8 March 2022). #1658: Rapid Security Responses, NYPD and industry standard AirTag news, Apple's Q2 2023 financials. #1659: Exposure notifications shut down, cookbook subscription service, alarm notification type proposal, Explain XKCD.#1660: OS updates for sports and security, Drobo in bankruptcy, why TidBITS doesn't cover rumors.#1661: Mimestream app for Gmail, auto-post WordPress headlines to Twitter and Mastodon, My Photo Stream shutting down.#1662: New Macs, 12 top OS features for 2023, vertical tabs in Web browsers, watchOS 9.5.1. of Psychology Undergraduate Research Symposium This twice-yearly event is hosted by the Kinesiology Club in the College of Education. But the standouts among the standouts were the chau chau dumplings (pork with chopped, crunchy water chestnuts and peanuts), the fried fish cakes (flat, scallion-pancakey disks with a thin layer of fish paste, and really superb panfried dumplings, juicy enough to almost be soup dumplings. Standouts were the shrimp and chive dumplings (both the steamed and fried versions), the modestly named Shanghai chow mein (with thick, chewy noodles), the deepfried bean curd sheets, and rice cakes with XO sauce (texture tossup between the same dish with slightly less chewy turnip cakes). Had another round of spectacular takeout dim sum from Winsor yesterday, spectacular even after a 30 minute drive home. It was sad to see all the steamer baskets, etc., all piled up, also ostensibly for sale. This was more a nostalgia trip than a great dim sum experience. For the sake of old times, we did pickup from Shangri La the weekend before they closed. There were three diners in the restaurant when I picked up around 3 p.m. Their fried shrimp and chive dumplings were bursting with tender shrimp, the Szechuan tripe was very tender and nicely tingly, and the panfried turnip cakes with xo sauce was, as observed above, much superior to the straight pan fried versions usually available elsewhere. (We’d chosen China Pearl over them because CP offers curbside pickup and W requires you to come in.) It was spectacular. Two days ago we did takeout from Winsor for the first time.Unfortunately they’ve cut back even further in their Chinatown operations and are now only open weekends.Įta: China Pearl Dim Sum menus (both locations). We loved their sticky rice in lotus leaf, their steamed and their fried shrimp dumplings with chives, and their pan fried pork buns. Their dumplings were all very fresh and bursting with flavor. Over the pandemic, though, they were cooking in small quantities and making a lot of things to order – and the quality shot up. As for the dim sum itself, there was usually better to be had at Winsor, Great Taste, etc. We’ve done the Lunar New Year there every year for over twenty years (except occasionally when we’ve been in NYC, whereupon we’ve done Jing Fong), usually with a large group. Our fondness for China Pearl is largely for its festive atmosphere.
